NIE number – what is it?

NIE: Numero de Identificacion de Extranjeros (Foreigners tax ID number)

In accordance with the law in Spain, every foreigner who buys a property in Spain has to obtain an identification number from the Spanish tax office, regardless of their nationality of whether or not they become residents. This is a tax reference number and allows the payment of tax by foreign residents when they purchase property, vehicles, etc.

How do I obtain my NIE number ?

Due to changes in Spanish law as of 1st January 2004, any foreigner wishing to obtain an NIE number has to apply in person, unless they obtain authorisation before a notary to allow a third party to apply on their behalf. If you apply for a NIE in person, then there are two ways you can do this. You can either apply in Spain at the local National Police Station or you can apply via the Spanish consulate in your country of residence.

Documentation required

  • Your passport and a copy of the main page of your passport.
  • The appropriate application form completed and signed plus a photocopy. Click here to download

If you decide to reside permanently in Spain, then if you intend to purchase property, you may still need to take out your residence permit. If you already have your NIE number, you will just need to complete the same form again but provide another copy of your passport plus four colour photographs. Contact MiVida Choices for more information or help to do this.
