Matadors to meet cultural minister

The Minister of Culture, Ángeles González-Sinde, will meet with a group of bullfighters on Thursday to hear their concerns after bullfighting was outlawed in Catalunya by the regional parliament in July.

The meeting, which was requested by the bullfighters at the end of July, will be held over lunch at the ministry and will be of an “informal” nature, according to a spokesperson for the minister.

A number of well known bullfighters will take part in the meeting, including Julián López “El Juli”, José Tomás, José Antonio “Morante de la Puebla”, Enrique Ponce and José María Manzanares, as well as lawyer and rancher Javier Araúz de Robles.

One of the ideas to be tabled at the meeting is the possibility of the bullfighting sector coming under the Ministry of Culture rather than being dependent on the Ministry of the Interior.

Another proposal the bullfighters will be putting on the table is that bullfights should be considered as a “Bien de Interés Cultural” (an event of special cultural interest).

The bullfighters also intend to meet with members of the different political parties, as well as with the Minister of the Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, and even with the King.
