Clegg and Zapatero to meet

The Spanish president, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, is having dinner this evening in the Moncloa Palace with the British deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg. They will be analysing the development of the economic crisis and the rescue policies put into place by the different European countries.

This will be Clegg’s first visit to the Moncloa Palace and his first face to face meeting with Zapatero, although the two have spoken before by phone after the general election last month and after the Liberal Democrat leader became part of the coalition government headed up by David Cameron.

According to government sources, their conversation will centre on the recession and the cuts announced by different governments ahead of two crucial dates: the European Council meeting to be held in Brussels on June 17th and the G20 summit being held on 26th and 27th June in Toronto (Canada).

Zapatero will have the opportunity to explain to Clegg his plans to reduce the public deficit and to hear the British government’s theory and the plans they intend to introduce after 22nd June when the budget is presented.

Cameron has already warned the British public to expect cuts that will have a substantial effect on their way of life but which are necessary to reduce the enormous public debt, which he described as worse than anticipated.
