Zapatero – General strike will not be assesed in terms of success or failure

The government has made it clear that it intends to respect the right to strike tomorrow but it also asks for the right of every person to go to work if he or she wants to; at the same time it promises not to enter into a numbers war with regard to turnout.

A committee has been created, presided over by Juan José Puerta, the president’s under-secretary, whose members have spent the last few days preparing the minimum services for the strike day tomorrow. This same committee will be following the effects of the strike from midnight tonight.

According to a government spokesperson, however, the president does not want to enter into a numbers war and has no intention of assessing the strike as either a success or a failure.

Emphasis is being placed on the day after the strike, when talks will begin again with the trade unions, regardless of what happens or doesn’t happen tomorrow.

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero will be at the Congress house first thing tomorrow morning to answer questions from the opposition.
