Self-employed want more benefits

A TOTAL of 85.1 per cent of self-employed workers believe they should be able to earn 12 months’ worth of dole money if they are forced to cease trading instead of the current six months.

Members of the National Federation of Associations of Autonomous Workers (ATA) believe that by paying an extra two per cent in social security, they should be entitled to three months’ dole per year worked up to a maximum of 12 months.

At present, they are not entitled to a penny unless they had previously accumulated it through being employed on a contract less than five years ago but a new law is being drafted to change their situation.

Last week over 100 amendments to the draft law were counted mostly relating to increasing the length of time over which the self-employed can claim dole money.

A total of 97.4 per cent believe they should have the right to claim dole in the same way as employees and 77.4 per cent say they are prepared to pay extra in social security every month in order to qualify.

A further 76.8 per cent would be prepared to may more still if it entitled them to a longer period of being able to claim dole.
